Expectations
, located about an hour away from Indianapolis in Muncie, is a privately owned, freestanding birth center. The Staffing Physician is Dr. John Peterson, and clients are seen by a Certified Nurse-Midwife for prenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, routine gynecologic, and preconception care. Each chart is reviewed twice by Dr. Peterson during prenatal care, and once for other care. Dr. Peterson is available if desired or needed, but will not routinely see normal patients through the course of their care by the Nurse Midwife. Laboratory tests are not included in the financial agreement, and are performed and billed through Pathologists Associated, one mile away. Ultrasound testing and specialized testing for high-risk conditions is referred to other facilities and billed accordingly.

We have taken every precaution to insure your safety, comfort, and preferences. We are not a hospital, however. We do not use continuous electronic fetal heart monitoring; narcotics, epidurals, or drugs to induce labor; forceps; or ultrasound imaging during labor. The birth center has the necessary equipment to initiate emergency treatment and arrangements for transport to Ball Memorial Hospital if needed. Since at this time Ball Memorial Hospital has no privileges for Certified Nurse-Midwives, Dr. John Peterson, MD, Expectations Staffing Physician who is Board Certified in Family Practice, will be responsible for the rest of your care. All hospital expenses incurred at such time are not included in the financial arrangement with Expectations.

Expectations
offers Individualized Care Based On These Basic Premises:
  • Mutual trust is an essential component of the relationship between client and midwife.
  • You have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.
  • You have the right and responsibility to be actively involved in making decisions about your care.
  • You have the responsibility to learn about the physical and psychological effects of labor and childbirth.
Your health is important to Expectations
  • We emphasize health maintenance and preventative health care.
  • We make a commitment of time to you, providing ample opportunity during each visit to discuss your questions and concerns.
  • We encourage you to read, attend classes, and ask questions, because education is a vital part of your care.
