Meet the Birth Center Team
Barb Bechtel, CNM
Barb practiced as a nurse at Ball Memorial hospital for 15 years. During this same time, she was a nursing instructor for both BSN and Nurse-Practitioner programs. Barb graduated from the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in 1997. She opened the first Birth Center in Muncie, Indiana in 1998. In 2001, she proudly became the owner and operator of the Indianapolis Birth Center, originally founded in 1993. Barb enjoys working at both Birth Centers. Barb states “It’s the best place in the world for a normal birth”. Barb and husband Tim, have been married over 30 years and are the parents of three grown children.

Carla G. Cleary, CNM MSN
I was inspired by the birth of my first child and the way Bradley Method helped me through natural childbirth. After receiving my BSN from I.U. School of Nursing in May of 1989, I worked in Med-Surg. For one year of experience and then began teaching Bradley classes. Soon I got to know the certified nurse-midwives who started the Birth Center and worked with them as a childbirth educator and birth assistant. Over the next ten years, I worked in all areas from high-risk OB to home birth. By the year 2000 I was ready to become a CNM myself and I attended the University of Cincinnati while still living in Indianapolis with my husband, Mike and our four children (Chris, Sean, Ian and Winona). I graduated in 2002 with my MSN and worked as a CNM for the next three years in hospitals, attending over 550 births.. I also received the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Award and even served in a remote U.S. territory, American Samoa. Our 25th wedding anniversary is June 6, 2006 and I hope to be happily attending Birth Center deliveries for a long, long time!

Sandra Bailey, CNM, MSN
People ask how I decided to become a midwife. It was not a decision; when I realized there were midwives and what they did, I knew that was to be my path. I have worked with pregnant women and birth in many capacities for 14 years. I graduated from Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in 2001, and from the University of TN in 2002 with a master of science in nursing. The birth center is where my heart lies, because we form relationships with our clients. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Derek, for 19 years and have 3 children, Brett, Kirk and Tara. We moved from Tennessee in May 2006 so I could join the staff at Expectations. I love my job!

Mary E. Soper, MD
Dr. Mary Soper completed her medical degree and OB-GYN residency at Indiana University. She has had a private practice at Methodist Hospital since 1980. Dr. Soper has been a long-time supporter of midwifery and alternative birthing and provides medical back-up at the Birth Center. She and her husband, John, are the parents of three daughters, Margaret, Becky, and Ginny.

Office Staff
Amy Ledford and Alice Morgan are the voices at the other end of the line when you make the call to Nurse Midwives of Indianapolis. They are there to answer your questions, handle insurance inquiries and set up appointments. You may see Amy doing double duty as she is also one of our awesome birth assistants.
